Following on from the data privacy concerns, mobile commerce also brings new opportunities for fraudsters to commit identity theft. While this is a risk associated with other forms of e-commerce, it tends to be more difficult to detect with mobile commerce.

This goes the other way as well. Mobile commerce can let criminals make fraudulent purchases, leading to increased chargebacks and financial losses for online merchants. 

Implementing an effective fraud detection system for mobile commerce is crucial so companies can identify suspicious activity before it becomes an issue. 

Lesser contact with customers 

A significant disadvantage of mobile commerce is that it limits your ability to interact with customers. 

In a traditional brick-and-mortar store, owners can speak with customers, ask them questions, and provide physical, personalized service. 

There’s no opportunity for this type of interaction when conducting mobile commerce online. The closest alternatives are live chat features, but they’re not quite the same.  

A downside is customers may unintentionally feel they’re not being heard or taken seriously by the company. This can be solved by taking steps to improve customer service. 

Strong competition

Mobile commerce is one of the fastest-growing areas of e-commerce and, therefore, one of its most competitive. 

Hundreds of apps are out there, and many large companies have already built mobile commerce and online shopping experiences. It’s a substantial challenge for startups to overcome by themselves.  

Is mobile commerce worth the investment? 

We’ll say it still definitely is. Mobile commerce is a concept that will keep growing and growing, which means it’s a market that will see plenty of action from businesses in the coming years.
